Skimboarding

The sport of skimboarding involves the riding of a board (which is generally referred to as a skimboard) on the flow of an outgoing wave. Another name for skim boarding is skimming. It was in the year 1929 along the vicinity of Laguna Beach, located in the state of California that the earliest recorded occurrence of skimboarding took place.

There is also photographic evidence that shows many Laguna Beach lifeguards who are skimming or more precisely skimboarding along the surface of the sand on large boards made of plywood. From that period on, the sport of skimboarding continued to grow in Laguna over the years (more precisely the first half of the 20th century). Not only in Laguna but the popularity of the sport of skimboarding also increased on an international front, spreading over a great spread of geographical regions. People seemed to be taking interest in the sport of skimboarding all over, fashioning the trend of home-made wood skim boards that were precisely constructed out of plywood and used at all sorts of local beaches.

However these skimboards had a circular shape in the general arena and the design of any skim board belonging to this category did not have a very appropriate design when it came to the issue of controlled skimboarding. For that case, making a skimboard demanded a lot of attention and concentration as well as a plenitude of observation in order for the skim board to come out just right and for the skimboarders to make the most out of their skimboarding schedule.

As far as the history of skimboarding goes, the early skimboards were given the name paipo boards specifically in the area of Hawaii. It was in the first half of the decade of the seventies that there occurred some changes in the process of how to make a skimboard. The changes took place in the context of the shape, the nature of which started sharing a strong resemblance with surfboards. In addition to that, the material with which skimboards were manufactured changed to fiberglass in contrast to plywood that was previously used for making skimboards. It was from the region of Laguna that Tex Haines initiated the business of skimboarding, which he gave the name Victoria, which was the name also given to the skimboards produced by the business, which were known as Victoria skimboards. With the growing popularity of the sport of skimboarding, other businesses also started manufacturing skimboards and the availability of skimboards became more accessible for the general public, thus managing to contribute towards increasing the popularity of skimboarding as a sport on the whole.

With that increasing popularity of skimboarding, the question as to how to skim board happened to have an answer with the mass market as they received the sport with open arms specially in those states where there are plenty of beaches as skimboarding is a water sport. Some of the most commonly known skimboards are inclusive of Zap skimboards along with the Cordents skimboard brand and also the foam skimboards as well as the Grape Skimboards brand.

In the initial stages of its existence, skimboarding was considered to be a sport that was played for purely recreational purposes. But with the growing popularity of the sport of skimboarding, the evolution of this game as a highly competitive water sport (that is taken much more seriously than a casual recreational sport) was somewhat inevitable.

However that does not mean that the importance of skimboarding as a recreational activity has faded at all. It is one sport that is equally popular, both on the competitive and formal front as well as on the casual and recreational front.
